Exactly 50 years ago today, Thomas S. Monson was sustained as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the second-highest presiding body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At age 36, he was the youngest man in 53 years to be called as an apostle.
