“And thus there became a great inequality in all the land, insomuch that the church began to be broken up; yea, insomuch that in the thirtieth year the church was broken up in all the land save it were among a few of the Lamanites who were converted unto the true faith; and they would not depart from it, for they were firm, and steadfast, and immovable, willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord.”

If we woke up tomorrow to find out that half of the membership of the Church had resigned along with half of the Apostles, how would we react? Such circumstances faced the fledgling Nephite/Lamanite Church at this point in time. Such a situation also faced the early church members in Kirtland after the temple dedication and the fall of the Kirtland Safety Society.

Would we doubt God’s promises and believe that we had been deceived. Would we fall into an inverse prosperity gospel mentality and see the decline in worldly success as a sign of apostasy?

Or would we be as these brace Lamanite members who remained “firm, and steadfast, and immovable?” Would we continue to heed the will of the Lord. Would we continue to hearken to the Lord’s anointed leaders?

It may yet be that we face a similar test in our day. Are we ready?
