This year, the Friend, New Era, and Ensign each celebrate 40 years of publication. Before the magazines were the Friend, New Era, and Ensign, there was the Young Woman’s Journal (first published in 1890), the Improvement Era (1898), the Juvenile Instructor (1901), the Children’s Friend (1902), and the Relief Society Magazine (1915). Learn more about the history of the Church magazines.
Church magazines have come a long way from the original publications in the 1800s. Today, you can access the magazines in print, online in text or in full graphic layout (PDF), on mobile devices, in audio format, and soon to be available on e-readers. Electronic articles are available from 1971 to the present issue. Monthly issues are published online by the 20th of the preceding month so you can appropriately plan home teaching and visiting teaching messages.
The magazine websites offer more than you’ll find in the printed edition:
- The Friend website (friend.lds.org) has stories, games, activities, and videos for children under age 12.
- The New Era website (newera.lds.org) includes past and current issues of the magazine online for youth, ages 12–18.
- The Ensign website (ensign.lds.org) offers the Church’s official magazine for adults.
- The Liahona website (liahona.lds.org) is available in 6 languages—English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and German. Using one of these 6 languages, you can navigate to an issue, and there you can find magazines in many more languages.
