Yesterday, I shared an infographic about Pinterest.
Pinterest has 12 million unique monthly visitors who spend an average of 1 hour and 17 minutes on the site.
Therefore, if you have a blog or website, you’ll want to make it easy for people to pin your content so that it will be more findable and sharable with others.
Why? The pins stay on Pinterest forever. When you post on Facebook or tweet on Twitter, if someone doesn’t see your post or tweet right away, chances are they will never see it. But people can go to your Pinterest boards anytime and see everything you’ve ever pinned.
The pins are also indexed by search engines, they are searchable by keywords, #hashtags, and categories. And the pins generate conversations and community.
If you want to see what others have pinned from your site, use Pinterest.com/source/yourURL.com (put the name of your site in place of yourURL.com).
How to make your blog or website more pinnable:
- Add a Pin It button to your blog or website.
- Use images that are quality, engaging, and cropped for focus. “Before” and “after” photos are popular.
- Add captions or text right in the image using PhotoShop or sites like Pixlr.com and PicMonkey.com.
- Use search keywords in the image filenames.
How to make your pins more repinnable:
- When you pin images to Pinterest, always add a description. Use searchable keywords and #hashtags. List resources for related information. Shorter is better (20-200 characters).
- Set up Pinterest boards that fit your brand. Boards should be a narrow topic. Know your audience and what will appeal to them. Popular topics: inspiring and funny quotes, #recipes, #DIY (do-it-yourself) projects, inspiring images, infographics, pins related to trending topics, and timely images (holidays and events). Pinterest is still 80% female, but it is becoming more popular with men, especially #DIY projects and business ideas.
- Pin a helpful tip, quote, or image daily.
- Image size: 300-550px wide. Taller images get repined more.
- Timing: pin when your readers are pinning. Generally, this is 2:00-4:00pm and 8:00pm-1:00am. Use Pingraphy.com to pre-schedule your pins.
- Create a “re-pinnable” board for your most interesting pins. Pin them to your regular topic board, then also to your “repinnable” board.
- Periodically rearrange your boards.
