father-sonfather-sonAnnual training for stake and ward auxiliary leaders is now available online at annualtraining.lds.org.

Improving Learning and Teaching in the Home and the Church
The training material is focused on principles that guide learning and teaching in the Savior’s way. These materials provide local leaders an important resource to review and use as the Spirit directs. The training materials may be used in stake and ward leadership meetings, council meetings, or in fifth-Sunday discussions. They may also be used for individual training.

This training has two parts: Part 1 discusses learning and teaching in the home and in the Church, presented as a round-table discussion lead by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. Part 2 contains instruction specific to the 5 auxiliaries.

Part 1: Videos about Learning and Teaching in the Home and the Church

This part of the training is found on two videos—one focused on the home and the other on the Church.

1. Learning and Teaching in the Home and the Church—The Home (10:43)

The home is a sacred place to learn and teach gospel principles. This informal setting allows daily teaching moments and is focused on meeting the needs of individuals and families.

Here are two great quotes from the video:

  • Learning and teaching: Elder Jeffrey R. Holland: “In the home and in the Church, we generally talk more readily about teaching maybe than we do about learning, and we probably have to strike that balance a little better in the years to come.”
  • Learning in the home: Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson: “We really don’t do the application at church. The application takes place in the home–the actual putting it into practice. We really don’t put it into practice as much at church, but we really do at home and in interaction with neighbors. That’s when the learning and the conversion is going to take place.”

2. Learning and Teaching in the Home and the Church—The Church (13:07)

Teaching in Church meetings and classes helps individuals and families learn the doctrine and take the principles into their homes. Effective teachers bear testimony and invite action.

Quotes from this video:

  • Elder Holland: “As we think of teachers,…it’s no small skill…to get the exchange and the involvement and not dominate–and a teacher isn’t just lecturing for 45 minutes–to let the dynamic happen, but also make sure that what you wanted to come across comes across. That takes a gifted, inspired teacher.”
  • Brother Callister: “These discussions all need to lead to an inspired conclusion that is doctrinally-based. It may not be the one we started with, but it ends there. But it often starts with a good question. I think we’ve learned that the caliber of the answers is often related to the caliber of the question.”
  • Sister Wixom: “On Sundays, what if when we went to church, what if that were the place where we could light the fire, and that we could come home and share what we’ve learned and what we’re going to do this week, to go back next week and build on that… Fan the flames of the spiritual core.”
  • Elder Holland: “It won’t be enough just to have a good social excange or an engergetic response and reply between this student and that student. That’s kind of the dynamic of it, that’s sort of the process of it, but I think we want to make sure that what they’re learning and discussing and having some ‘ah-ha’ moments about will be the doctrine of the Church. We need to make sure that there is doctrine laced in to all those conversations.”
  • Sister Oscarson: “There needs to be a lot more interaction between those who are teaching and the parents of those they are teaching.”
  • Sister Wixom: “You really come to know them and know their needs so that you can teach to their needs rather than teach the lesson.”

Part 2: Organization-Specific Training

The second part of the page at annualtraining.lds.org contains training materials specific to the Relief Society, Young Men, Young Women, Primary, and Sunday School. Each section contains videos and instructions. In the right margin of each page is also a PDF you can download and print that provides a summary of the training.
