In September, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland sent an email to everyone who teaches a class in the Church, wherein he invited teachers to join him and the General Auxiliary Presidencies in this interactive online discussion.

This event will answer questions about teaching in the Savior’s way, teacher council meetings, and new teacher orientation, which were recently introduced as part of an ongoing effort to “help members build faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ through improved gospel teaching and learning” (see May 2, official Church notice).

Why this renewed emphasis on teaching?

LDS leaders want to help us become better—and more active—learners, a critical skill we need in an age saturated by information. “With the current conditions of the world, we desperately need real learning and teaching in our homes, meetings and gospel classes,” said Matthew Richardson in the October 2011 general conference.

This fresh emphasis on learning and teaching will use improved methods, teaching manuals, and curriculum that will be rolled out over the next several years. It is intended to transform teaching and learning in Sunday School, Primary, Relief Society, priesthood—and in the home. In the past, teachers often focused on presenting information (lecturing). Leaders now want teachers to concentrate on the process of helping learners take responsibility for learning the gospel—to awaken in them the desire to study, understand, and become converted to live the gospel.

Who should attend

If you have a calling to teach, you are invited to participate. A member of each stake presidency and bishopric, the stake high councilor assigned to Sunday School, elders quorum presidencies, high priests group leaderships, and all stake and ward auxiliary presidencies are also invited.

How to participate

Submit questions related to teaching at lds.org/broadcasts/teaching anytime before the event. Then watch the event on Saturday, November 5, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. MDT on LDS.org or the Church satellite system. Live interpretation will be provided in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and American Sign Language.

If you can’t watch it live, you can view it on LDS.org any time after the event begins. You can also stream or download the broadcast later at lds.org/broadcasts/training.
