James Allen Smith was a man of his time and place. Born in York County, South Carolina, in 1851, he went through the Civil War as a child – and as a child he took up smoking, then learned to chew and spit tobacco, and began to drink. He married and was widowed while still a teenager.
And he rode with the Ku Klux Klan.
