Google Photos has released some new features powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
Photo-to-Video
The photo-to-video feature in Google photos can turn any photo into a six-second video animation. Today, there are two options:
- “Subtle movements” adds gentle, cinematic motion to your photo, like a slow pan or zoom effect. It is meant to preserve the original feel of the photo.
- “I’m feeling lucky” applies a random animation effect to your photo. Sometimes it’s playful and sometimes dramatic.
How to use it:
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Tap the Create tab (rolling out in August 2025).
- Select a photo.
- Choose either “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky”.
- Wait about a minute for a 6-second animated video to be generated.
Photo Editing
AI-powered features can now help you edit photos more easily and get more creative with your edits. Different AI-powered effects will pop up when you begin editing a photo. The following is a sample of what you can do.
- In the text box, just describe what changes you want. For example, “make the sky more blue” or “change the color of the car from white to gray.”
- Use Remix to transform your photo into comics, sketches, anime, or 3D animations.
- Use the Reimagine feature to fix backgrounds and objects.
- Use Magic Eraser and Photo Blur to fix a specific area of the photo. Tap specific parts of an image to get suggestions for that area.
Searching and Sharing Photos
- Searching. To find a specific photo on your phone, search using a word like “tree” to find photos with trees. You can also ask it to “find photos of Larry standing in front of the house” or “show where we camped last time we went to Idaho.” You can improve search results by naming faces in the section “People and Pets.”
- Sharing. You can create shared albums in Google Photos to let anyone contribute. You can even use the app to create a QR code to easily share the album with others so they can add or view photos.
Google Photos is free to anyone with a Gmail account and is the default photo gallery for Android phones,
These features are just rolling out, so if your Google Photos app doesn’t have them yet, it soon will.
