senior-missionaries

You and your spouse may have planned to serve a senior mission after you retire. But did you know you don’t have to wait for retirement, or for better health, or for the perfect family situation to serve a senior service mission?

You can be called as a senior service missionary beginning at age 26. And you can serve if you are married or single.

  • You may live at home and serve from home or close by.
  • You can be married or single, male or female.
  • Your spouse does not need to serve with you.
  • You do not need to be retired, since you can serve 8–40 hours a week.
  • You can serve 6–24 months. You may extend multiple times with ecclesiastical and operational approval.
  • You can serve beginning at age 26. You can also serve before age 26 if you have already served a teaching or service mission, are married, or if the young service missionary program is not available in your area.

There are many support roles that are needed to help the Church function. Here are some examples of how you could serve:

  • Leadership and fellowshipping.
  • In a mission office, family history center, Church recreation camp, visitors’ center, historic site, bishop’s storehouse, home storage center, cannery, employment center, temple, Church headquarters, or area office.
  • Humanitarian work.
  • Self-reliance.
  • Military relations.
  • Seminary or institute teacher.
  • Property maintenance.
  • Public affairs.
  • Church history.
  • Family history.
  • Addiction recovery.
  • BYU Pathway Worldwide.
  • Young single adult programs.
  • Legal support.
  • Health care.

The number of senior missionaries serving around the world is only about half of the current need. Go to SeniorMissionary.ChurchofJesusChrist.org and enter information about your talents, skills, financial situation, and family, and it will show you missionary opportunities that may be a good fit. You can then submit your preferences. Your assignment will be determined by an Apostle, but your preferences are taken into consideration.

Please consider serving a senior service mission. It will change your life.
