In my notes for President Uchtdorf’s talk I have written “fall, and get back up.” He wasn’t commanding us to fall. He was stating that it was inevitable.
Yesterday morning I flipped through my mission scriptures where I found this highlighted verse:
And ye are called to bring to pass the gathering of mine elect; for mine elect hear my voice and harden not their hearts;
At the time I marked it up, I had in mind the people of Spain as the possible elect. Yesterday, I had in mind myself. Was I elect?
With Uchtdorf’s talk still in mind, I saw that the elect were not defined by their obedience, but by responding when the master calls.
The canon has two great metaphors for the people of God. They are his sheep; they are his little children.
Neither sheep nor children are ruly creatures. They wander and they stray. But good sheep can be bidden back to the flock. Good children come when they are called.
