We don’t make a habit of chronicling or rejoicing in the woes of our brethren on the Tiber, so if you have achieved peak JG and are a hermit living under a rock you may not be aware of the recent explosion of gay abuse charges in the Catholic Church.  It appears almost certain, for instance, that a close ally of Pope Francis’, Cardinal “Uncle Ted” McCarrick was running seminaries as grooming operations.  I am not aware that he forcibly raped anyone, but he certainly went pretty far in using his power and influence to prey on his sheep.  What he did was deeply disturbing and deeply corrupting.

Now an archbishop and former papal nuncio to the United States has charged that Pope Francis knew.  He says he personally told the Pope in 2013 and that despite all the Pope continued to treat “Uncle Ted” as one of his closest advisors and top decisionmakers.  Rod Dreher has the details.

I don’t know if the accusations are true or not [update: I am leaning towards them being true].   One important detail–that Pope Benedict found out and tried to discipline McCarrick but was defied–appears to be partially confirmed by Pope Benedict.  Certainly the resignation of Pope Benedict has been begging for an explanation.

The pope has refused to deny the charges in a very odd way.  Yes, he’s an odd duck, but it tends to lend credence to the charges.

If true, this is a significant blow.  If not, it is still a significant blow.  Like Ross Douthat says (see Rod Dreher’s link above), this is a shot in a civil war.

Dreher has much, much more.

More from Powerline.

The RC grapevine says that Vigano was in a position to know what he says he knew, and has a rep for hating corruption.

These things did not happen in a vacuum.  Most people are not aware that powerful American Democrats during the Obama administration formed a political effort to liberalize the Catholic Church.  In the current explosion, the media powers that be have already started to downplay the allegations and attack the accuser.

There is an old Spanish saying:

Cuando las barbas de tu vecino ves pelar, pon las tuyas a mojar. (When you see your neighbor forcibly getting shaved, lather up).

This is your daily reminder that Modernity is immense, powerful, hostile, and subversive.

We have no truce with Modernity.  We are under attack also.  Did the Ordain Women movement, which consisted of a handful of people, get instant NYT and WaPo press by some kind of coincidence?  Are enemies are funded, savvy, coordinated, and supported by the great in the land.  It’s no secret that BYU has been becoming more ‘modern’ over the last decade.  The pressure is there.

Here is an ominous list.  It shows churches succumbing to Gleichschaltung at mostly the same rate as their members are elites.

This is from Darel Paul’s book “From Tolerance to Equality: How Elites Brought America to Same-Sex Marriage.” “Normalization of individuals” means permitting homosexuality and openly gay priests, etc. “Normalization of families” means recognizing and performing same-sex marriages. Years indicate when this happened, blanks mean it hasn’t happened.

We are up next. The Catholics should be after us, but they are so powerful and symbolic of Christianity as a whole, its no wonder they are also currently being walked under the yoke.

It will get worse for us before it gets better. Be calm, knowing that evils will come, but that in the end good will prevail. Pray earnestly for us and for our Catholic friends.

Comments welcome, especially from our Catholic friends. For Mormon commenters, be brotherly.
