Life during Spiritual Wartime, an Exorcist on the Benedict Option is one of the most important things Rod Dreher has written.  Many of us out here believe that we live in extreme times and business as usual won’t cut it as a response.  But just like with Dreher’s Benedict Option, the general impression seems to be that we are advocating a series of material techniques that could work for Christians but would equally well work for any minority under threat.

Not so.

The principal thing, the  main thing, is the metaphysical, spiritual recognition that (1) dark powers wage war on us and (2) that #1 is deeply connected to our societies, cultures, neighborhoods, careers, it is not just an ethereal thing.

Once that recognition comes, there has to be a practical response.  It has to be serious.  People who claim to have the recognition but claim that it doesn’t mean anything in particular for how they come to be are telling lies.  But, without the recognition, all practical responses will be wrong.

We laugh and clown here.  It is not because we are complacent.  It is because we are trying to teach you to make war merrily.
