Friend of the JG Bruce Charlton has a criticism of obedience/surrender to God’s will. He says that it is the wrong model of what God wants for us and is not the fundamental doctrine that explains our theology. Which is all true enough, but misses the point.
Mormons are big on obedience. I imagine most Mormons would response to Dr. BC by saying that while obedience is not the end, it is an extremely important aid to achieving the end, an aid without which mortals cannot do. Also true enough, but also missing the point.
Submission to God is primarily an ecstatic experience. It is gorgeous.
