Fathers Day at our ward passed without a hitch. There were songs that were not about fatherhood. There were talks that were not about fatherhood. The Primary President did have a song about fathers the kids were ready to sing, but we dodged any possible mishaps there when the Bishop vetoed it on the grounds it would take up too much time. There was a gift for the dads though.
Alas, fatherhood is not one of those things we can afford to shrug off in this day and age.
Fortunately, we talked about it in Sunday School. The last chapters in Jesus’ mortal life in John have a number of things that Christ says about his relationship with his father. They are pretty affecting.
No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also
he that hath seen me hath seen the Father
I am in the Father, and the Father in me
The Father dwelleth in me.
I am in the Father, and the Father in me
I am in the Father, and the Father in me, and I in you
I am in the Father, and ye in me, and I in you
If a man love me, my Father will love him
The word which ye hear is the Father’s which sent me
If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I go unto the Father
I love the Father
As the Father gave me commandments, even so I do
As the Father hath loved me, so I have loved you
I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love
he that hateth me hateth my Father also
All things that the Father hath are mine
The FAther himself loveth you, because ye have loved me
I came forth from the Father, I go to the Father
Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me
Then, Christ addresses his Father directly
Glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee
Thou has given thy Son power over all flesh
I have glorified thee on earth, I have finished the work with thou gavest me to do
Glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory I had with thee before the world was
Thou gavest me men out of the world
I came out from thee
All mine are thine, and thine are mine
We are one
I came to thee
Thou hast sent me unto the world
Thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee
Thou hast sent me
The glory thou gavest me
We are one
Thou hast sent me, thou hast loved me
Thou hast given me glory
Thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world
I have known thee
Thou hast loved me
