Intense awareness of the moment is a characteristic of heroes that makes them seem insouciant.  They are extraordinarily present, which allows them to do extraordinary things.   For the best type of hero, their powerful nowness can include a vivid and diamond-cut calculation of effects and possibilities, but their focus is still on this moment.

Fear, on the other hand, is an intense awareness of possibilities as if they were already happening.
