If you don't remember this quote from General Conference, you are not alone. Elder Holland didn't speak it in Conference.
This quote comes from an address he gave young adults at Stanford University on February 9, 2020.
To be of good cheer is a commandment, not just encouragement!
This is a new way of thinking about it.
The most recent General Conference address on this subject is President Dallin H. Oaks from October, 2020.
In fact, it's a recurring topic in General Conference:
- President Thomas S. Monson, April, 2009
- Elder Adhemar Damiani, April, 2005
- Sister Jeanne Inouye, October, 1993
- Elder Marvin J. Ashton, April, 1986
- Elder Neal A. Maxwell, October, 1982
- be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee, Matt. 9:2.
- Be of good cheer; it is I, Matt. 14:27 (Mark 6:50; D&C 61:36; 68:6; 78:18).
- be of good cheer; I have overcome the world, John 16:33.
- Be of good cheer, Paul, Acts 23:11.
- be of good cheer: for I believe God, Acts 27:25.
- cheer up your hearts, 2 Ne. 10:23.
- Lift up your head and be of good cheer, 3 Ne. 1:13.
- be of good cheer, little children, D&C 61:36.
- be of good cheer, and do not fear, D&C 68:6.
- be of good cheer, for I will lead you along, D&C 78:18.
- Let thy heart be of good cheer before my face, D&C 112:4.
Since Elder Cook's address will be part of our modern scripture for about the next six months. Remember to read it with an eye toward viewing being cheerful as a commandment and not just as a suggestion.
